Global Mobile Games Industry to Double Revenue by 2017

The worldwide mobile games industry will double in revenue from $17.5 billion to $35.4 billion (£10.3 billion to £20.9 billion) in the next three years, a new report from AppLift and Newzoo predicts. The report shows that the mobile gaming market in Western Europe, which was once one of the fastest-growing in the world, is now one of the slowest. Meanwhile, the Latin American market is now the fastest-growing, with year-on-year growth of 60%.

The average spend per month by mobile users on games is growing, too – the data shows that in Western Europe, users typically spend $4.95 (£2.92) per month, while the highest spends are seen in North America at $6.21 (£3.66) per month.

“We anticipate smartphone and tablet gaming to take 27% of the global games market this year,” said Peter Warman, chief executive officer at Newzoo.

The news comes shortly after mobile messaging platform Tango created a $25 million (£14.7 million) investment fund for games developers around the world, which should help to support studios and bring more exciting titles to mobile.
