New Samsung Galaxy S5 is launched

As always the GSM conference in Barcelona is used as a launch pad for new devices and this year is no exception. The star of the show so far has been the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S5 Smartphone. The news was hotly anticipated.

The new handset has gone back to basics in so far as Samsung asked their customers what they wanted in a phone and a clear message came back that they wanted a handset which took great photos, was easy to use and made calls clearly. To this end they have worked very hard to produce a real rival the iconic iPhone.

Despite this ‘back to basics approach’ the new Samsung, which has a global launch date of April 11th, is still packed with goodies and some interesting accessories. It’s processor is a 2.5GHz quad-core processor and runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS. The phone is dust and water resistant and includes a finger scanner. The phone also has a fitness tracker.

The company also launched its Gear Fit Product which is a wearable watch like device with a curved screen. This links to the new S5 telling you when a call or text has arrived but also offers fitness coaching.

The competition in the smartphone market is astonishingly tough illustrated by Nokia’s new releases making few ripples compared to Samsung’s launch. A few years ago Nokia were the company to watch with a seemingly unassailable position as the clear market leader.

The show in Barcelona will no doubt throw up a few surprises but none will be as widely reported as Samsung’s new release. Although the global launch is set for April 11th no date has yet been set for the UK launch, however, all the main network operators and retailers such as Phones 4U and Carphone Warehouse have announced they will be stocking the handset.  Alongside the news that the the handset will be stocked by all the large retailers you’d expect, plans are already in place so that customers picking up a new Samsung can take out Smartphone insurance with
