What is mobile phone insurance?
With options for damage, breakdown, loss and theft, mobile phone insurance can protect you by covering the cost of repair or replacement. The extent of protection you get depends on the level of cover you choose.
Smartphones play a crucial role in most people's day-to-day lives, and having a reliable insurance policy can help take one less worry off your mind. The best models are more expensive than ever, and many people pay for long-term contracts, so it's understandable to want to cover yours in case of mishaps such as liquid damage or theft.

What can affect the cost of
mobile phone insurance?
Policy excess
Our policies have a set excess amount that you pay when any claim is made. This allows us to ensure that your premiums for cover remain as competitive as possible.
The model of phone
It wouldn't make sense to charge the same premium for a top-of-the-range iPhone and a three-year-old device – so we don't! The storage size could also have an impact.
Policy term
Paying for different kinds of cover in one annual fee often works out cheaper than paying monthly. You can get a discount with our phone insurance if you pay annually too. Pay in one lump sum for the year and we'll only charge you for 10 of the 12 months.
Insurance Premium Tax
No matter who you buy your mobile insurance from, all premiums will have added tax at the current rate.
Cost of repairs and replacements
The cost of repairing or replacing a newer model of handset is higher due to parts and replacement costs. The premium amount you pay will always take into consideration your specific phone.
What you are covered for
Your premium will vary depending on the level of cover you choose. Optional cover such as theft and loss will increase the amount that you pay.
"The cost of mobile phone insurance depends on factors like your phone model, coverage level and excess fee. Premium phones or more comprehensive coverage can drive up the price, so it's all about finding the right balance between protection and budget." James, Customer Service Agent

Your mobile insurance policy should reflect your lifestyle and have the appropriate level of cover for your needs.
Have you bought your phone from a UK VAT registered seller?
You can only insure mobile phones that have been purchased from UK-registered companies. You can check if a company is registered before you purchase your phone here.
Your mobile phone was new when you bought it?
Refurbished phones are a great way to purchase premium devices without paying a premium price. You can insure refurbished mobile phones as long as they were purchased with a 12 month warranty.
The device is in good working order
We know that cracks and breakdowns can’t be helped sometimes – that’s why we protect phones against them! – but unfortunately if your phone is not in good working order before you purchase your policy, we cannot protect your device. For example, if you drop your phone and break the screen, you cannot start a new insurance policy and claim to fix your screen.
You are 18 years old, or over
Mobile phone insurance is a binding financial contract, so we can only make this agreement with someone who is 18 or over. If your child has a phone that you have bought for them, you may purchase a policy for the device, and their usage will be covered as long as they permanently live with you.
Lost Sim Card?
A lost SIM Card. Mobile phone Insurance doesn’t typically cover lost SIM cards. You should get in touch with your network provider to organise a replacement.
Theft Unattended
Whilst certain policies cover for theft, you may sometimes not be covered if you have left your phone unattended, maybe in a coffee shop or on the train. It’s worth checking with individual insurers.
Intentional Damage
You cannot claim for repairs if you purposely damaged your own phone.
Worldwide Traveller
If you travel often to foreign countries, make sure your policy covers either the world, or the country you are traveling to is in line with current government guidance. There may also be limitations in the number of days your ‘phone’ can be out of the country. Read the following to tips before choosing which policy is correct for you.
We have a dedicated FAQs page, however we've also answered some commonly asked questions specific to phone insurance below.
Phone Insurance FAQs
New devices and handsets are the norm these days – with all major manufacturers releasing new models every year. Although yearly upgrades to their specifications are more modest, top-tier modern handsets often cost over £1,500.
Investing in the latest technology is becoming increasingly costly, so taking out phone insurance tends to be a key consideration.
Most new devices are bought on a contract – typically every 2/3 years as part of an upgrade or new deal with a network provider. If you lose your phone, have it stolen or drop it and crack the screen, you're still stuck paying a hefty monthly cost – without your shiny new device (or with one that's now dented and scratched).
While you'll need to pay a monthly premium – or annual lump sum – for mobile insurance, and cover an excess if something goes wrong, it's a small price compared to shelling out potentially over £1,500 for a replacement.
Before you buy a phone insurance policy, it's a good idea to check if your mobile is already covered by another policy or benefit.
Even if you are already covered, it's worth checking how much cover you have. Remember that home insurance policies may provide different cover levels compared to more specialised policies like ours.
Keep in mind that home insurance may not cover your phone outside of the house. Plus, the excess can be steep (sometimes as high as £500) and making a claim could affect your no-claims bonus, increasing future premiums.
While we offer peace of mind with phone protection, there are steps you can take too – like using a sturdy case to guard against everyday bumps and scrapes.
Additionally, you should keep it hidden and out of sight in your bag or pocket to deter pickpockets while out and about. You should never leave your phone unattended or in the possession of people you do not know or trust.
If you must leave your device in the car, ensure your phone is out of sight, such as in a locked centre console or the glovebox or boot. The vehicle should also be locked with your alarm and any security systems activated. All doors and windows need to be closed too.
We also recommend regularly backing up your device. If your phone is lost or stolen, your contacts, messages, emails and photos will be saved up to your most recent backup.
You can buy a mobile phone insurance policy, as long as your child permanently resides with you, you own the device and can provide proof of purchase if you need to make a claim.
When they reach the age of 18, you can switch the cover to their name at no extra cost.
To see a full list of our exclusions, take a look at our Terms & Conditions.
You can purchase a mobile phone insurance policy if the mobile was originally purchased in the UK – even if you've had it up to 3 years already. You must also meet our other criteria for buying a policy, these can be found in the terms and conditions of the policy you are looking at.
In the event of a claim you will have to provide the original proof of purchase and a gifting letter from the person who bought you the mobile phone.
There are a few ways you can make a claim with us.
