What is laptop insurance?
These devices have become essential tools for everyday life – and having reliable insurance for your laptop can give you peace of mind. With the rising cost of top-tier models and the significant investment you might make in long-term contracts, protecting your device from accidents, liquid damage or theft could be the smart choice.
Laptop insurance can offer reassurance that your device is covered in the event of one of these situations.
Do I need to insure my laptop?
[Name], [Job title] at Insurance2go, explains why it's a good idea to insure your laptop:
"We've all experienced the sinking feeling when something happens to our device, hoping it's not damaged. Laptop insurance offers peace of mind by protecting against unexpected mishaps, such as drops, spills or theft. Laptops are expensive investments and the cost of repairs or replacements can be significant, especially for high-end models. With the increasing reliance on laptops for family use, study and entertainment, having cover is a smart way to avoid the financial strain of unexpected accidents or damage."

Laptop facts
Despite their name, laptops shouldn't sit on your lap when they're in use. They generate heat that needs to find its way out, usually through vents in their undersides. If they can't ventilate properly, laptops can overheat and stop working. This is why you often see stands designed for laptops with fans that cool the machines down. If you don't have a cooling fan for your laptop, use it on a solid flat surface.
Laptops as we recognise them today have been around for about 40 years. The first of these was the GRID Compass, launched in 1982, but it wasn't much loved so didn't catch on. Faring better was the Japanese Kyocera Kyotronic 85, which came out in 1983. However, it was still another three years until laptops became IBM-compatible in 1986.
In the years since, laptops have become indispensable to people all over the world. TV catch-up, video-calling, news, gaming, banking and shopping are just some of the ways we rely on our laptops so, when they go missing, we need them back. Fast.

How much does laptop insurance cost?
How much it costs to insure a laptop depends on the value of your device. Generally, the more expensive your laptop, the higher the insurance premium. Newer and higher-end models will cost more to insure.
When comparing laptop insurance, be sure to check the level of coverage and any excess fees that might apply when you make a claim.
You can usually choose between paying monthly or annually for your coverage. If you choose to pay annually, it often works out cheaper in the long run, so it's worth considering this option.
