5G Coming to London by 2020

Forget 4G – those living in London will have access to 5G mobile speeds within the next four years, according to Mayor Boris Johnson. As part of the drive to improve infrastructure in the capital over the next few decades, the presumably-blisteringly-fast 5G will be available in London by 2020, says Mr Johnson.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the UK will partner with Germany to develop 5G research, with the University of Surrey set to take a leading role in the project. EU countries have also been working with South Korea to define and create 5G, which is expected to be up to 1,000 times faster than 4G – with theoretical download speeds of up to 100 Gb/s.

“London is earning a reputation for being the tech capital of Europe and that is why we need to ensure every Londoner is able to access the very best digital connectivity. Rapidly improving the connectivity of this great city is a key part of the Infrastructure Plan for London," said Boris Johnson.
