The Chancellor of the exchequer confirmed yesterday that every Broadband account would be subject to a £6 a year levy to pay for the extension of broadband services to the entire population by 2020. This is excellent news for internet operators and retailers as it widens their potential markets. It is also very good news for locations currently without broadband as the development will open up new work and employment opportunities to them that are currently not available.

The Carpone Warehouse is to split their telecoms and retail businesses, the move, which was announced ages ago has been given high court approval. Shareholders will get a share in each business for every 2 held in the current carphone group. It will be interesting to see which performs better once they begin trading as two seperate entities from 29th March.

Zain, the Kuwaiti Telecoms operator, has approved the sale of nearly all of its African assets to Bharti Airtel,India’s largest telecoms group.
