Tesco to offer the iPhone before Christmas

Tesco Mobile is set to offer the iPhone before Christmas, the company have announced.

Tesco Mobile MVNO, which uses the O2 network and will offer Apple’s device on pay as you go and pay monthly basis. It did not reveal price plans but said tariffs would be ‘very competitive’.

Tesco Mobile said: ‘Tesco Mobile through its joint venture partnership with O2 is pleased to announce that it will shortly introduce iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in Tesco Phone Shops and online through Tesco Direct in the UK.’

This is quite a coup for the retailer who will now beat Vodafone in being able to offer the iPhone. Vodafone will be able to offer it but not until after Christmas in 2010.

An industry insider recently told us at insurance2go.co.uk that apple control the upfront pricing of the units very strictly which means that companies offering the unit can only compete on the tariff and network coverage.

Orange began selling the iPhone on 10th November and has concentrated its marketing on its network coverage rather than pricing.

Tesco is planning an expansion of its dedicated in store mobile shops and presumably the addition of the iphone to its portfolio will bolster this expansion.

Insurance offered on the top of the range iPhone is quite toppy. Carphone charge over £160 a year and Orange charge £12 a month or £144 a year.

Insurance2go has been providing mobile phone insurance for over 5 years and have a great record of offering great value insurance. To insure an iPhone Insurance2go charges just £5.99 a month.
