Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

The global mobile phone app market was worth £1.4 billion during the first half of 2010, this is more than the total value for the whole of 2009 according to a new report.

Mobile market research specialist Research2Guidance estimates the smartphone app market was worth £1.1 billion last year, meaning the first half figure for 2010 has already gone passed that.

The number of smartphone applications downloaded has also beaten the 3.1 billion recorded over the whole of last year and has reached 3.9 billion in the first half of 2010.

Research2Guidance’s Global Smartphone Application Report 2010 also found the average price paid for applications reached £2.31 in the first half of this year.

Research2Guidance said its results show the app market is continuing to gain momentum as more smartphone users get direct access to app stores. It predicts more specialised app stores to come on line in the future.

A spokesperson for Research2Guidance said: ‘Apple’s competitors like Nokia and BlackBerry started to leverage their global reach and increased the traffic on their app stores’.

Nearly half of the same group of people questioned said they would send good news by text message, with 24% saying they prefer to text when they have bad news to break.

The main reason for this is that the more mature person can plan what they are going to say and then use their mobile to send the message.

Facebook is not just for the younger generation either, with research showing that 4% of the over 65s saying they regularly sent big news by this method of communication.

An expert in all this sort of stuff has said – ‘Advancements in technology over the last 20 years mean how we send and receive news is different across all generations’.

The same expert then said ‘It’s not just teenagers who are sharing life changing news by text, those in their 60s have become more at ease with this form of communication, and prefer in some situations to break big news in one simple, short message. In many cases, this is because they can keep in close contact with those who have grown up with texting as the norm’.

New picocell could end Networks worries over capacity

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

BelAir networks have launched the picocell which is a small outdoor unit which delivers mobile broadband and is a fraction of the cost to install compared to that of erecting new masts.

The units could be a cost effective way to solve the problem of lack of capacity which is causing the network operators headaches with the incredible rise in the use of Smartphones.

The units are very flexible in where they can be put, posts, street furniture, the side of buildings or even underground.

Thus far using smaller boosting stations has presented three issues for network operators, firstly lack of power, locations and backhaul requirments. The new unit get around these issues. The units can help mobile or cable companies route traffic. It can route traffic straight to the 3G network or the Wi-Fi function can direct traffic to the networks 3G core or finally the Wi-Fi can be used to send traffic to the internet bypassing the 3G network altogether

Orange iPhone uers lose unlimited data

Orange have become the second UK operator to drop the offer of unlimted data for iPhone users. O2 dropped the offer in June of this year. It means that users might face a higher bill in future if they go over the standard limits of 500mb or 1gb. Would it be cynical of us to ask why this move was made on a Monday in the middle of the holiday season in August?

All the network operators are under pressure to upgrade their networks to make sure that customers can use their mobile devices as often as possible.

The increase in Smartphone use has put pressure on capacity of the networks as more and more people use their handsets to download information from the internet.
