Some early users of the iPhone 4 are reporting loss of signal when they hold the handset in a certain way. A bit odd, Steve jobs said: ‘All phones have sensitive areas, just avoid holding it in this way’.

Despite that sales have been strong and some retailers are bemoaning a lack of stock. Phones4U were taking a deposit off customers wishing to reserve a handset. It was thought that anyone paying the deposit was guaranteeing a unit for themselves, unfortunately this is not necessarily the case as there just wasn’t enough stock to go round.

Inmarsat to launch a handheld Satellite phone

Inmarsat, the maker of satellite telephone systems, is to launch the first handheld satellite mobile phone, which it hopes will capture 10% of the market within two years.

The FTSE 100 listed company thinks that the handset will be very attractive to those who need coverage where the masts from the ‘normal’ providers don’t reach. Oil explorations, driving in the outback in Australia, some mountain rescue outfits, sailors on smaller craft. The rates are supposedly competitive enough to compete with some ‘normal’ mobile’s roaming charges.

New phones, Skypt on Sony Ericssons and O2 dispute

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Sony Ericsson to launch Skype on their flagship smartphones.

Sony Ericsson has added Skype to its flagship smartphones the Satio, Vivaz, and Vivaz Pro. Skype can be used either with a Wi-Fi connection or via the internet.

Obviously Skype is very attractive to users as it is free to use if two users are both talking on a Skype connection. It is possible that this something that will hit the operators revenue hard if more and more people begin using the service especially for calling abroad or whilst abroad.

Network operators in the UK are licking their wounds after their challenge to the European court to claim that the enforced reduction in roaming charges is too harsh was rejected. The networks have a few headaches to contend with – all are suffering from the massive amount of data being downloaded across their networks, reduced income from roaming and if Skype takes off on mobile this could hit revenues even further.

O2 could be heading for industrial action over pay offer.

Best Buy to stock iPhone 4 and iPhone Insurance News

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Best Buy which is 50% owned by the Carphone Warehouse is going to stock the Apple iPhone 4 from 24 June.

The move coincides with the opening of their third UK store at Merry Hill in the West Midlands, which is set to open the day after the iPhone 4 launch.

This latest deal confirms a shift in the way Apple is marketing its latest iPhone, moving away from exclusive deals to a broader distribution of the handset from multiple retailers.

So far Apple has done deals with all five UK mobile phone operators, as well as Phones 4u and Carphone Warehouse for the iPhone 4. It is also expected that the iPhone 4 will be available to buy from Tesco stores quite soon.

The expectation is that the main customers for the iPhone 4 will be old iPhone customers who will get rid of their old iphones and just buy the new. This will cost the operators a lot of money in acquisition costs. Meanwhile the old iPhones will go to webstores and will be bought by people who will then get a sim only deal.

Customers will no doubt be offered iPhone insurance at point of sale. Here at www.insurance2go.co.uk we always recommend customers shop around before taking mobile phone insurance. Better mobile phone insurance deals can often be found online and we think we have a very competitive product. Check out www.insurance2go.co.uk/iPhone-insurance for further details.
