Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Vodafone has announced that they will be able to offer their customers the iPhone early in 2010. They hope the move to announce this development now will limit the number of customers who are tempted to switch to either O2 or Orange just ot get hold of an iPhone.

The development would leave 3 as the only network not able to offer the iPhone (assuming the T-Mobile and Orange merger goes ahead).

Whichever network your handset is connected to you’ll be able to insure yours with insurance2go.

“This is a good deal for competition, I don’t envisage any significant issues” he said. “There’s been alot of rubbish talked about prices going up. Why on earth would they go up? It’s completely the wrong direction”.

Whether of not the deal is scrutinised and if and when it happens you can be sure to know that insurance2go will be happy to insure the handsets on all networks.

BT are now free to compete with rivals in any manner it chooses. The move by Ofocm ends 25 years of controls that has held BT back from being allowed to offer some services such as discounted bundles such as the triple product made up of fixed line phone services, broadband and digital television.

The move should benefit consumers as pressure is put on BTs rival such as Carphone Warehouse and Virgin Media to be as competitive as possible.

T-Mobile and Orange to merge

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

T-Mobile and Orange are to merge to create the UK’s largest mobile phone company with about 37% market share. The announcement is contrary to what we reported yesterday when we said that Vodafone and O2 had both made offers for the German owned T-Mobile.

The move will result in a telecoms giant with 28 million customers. The two brands will run seperately for 18 months then branding will be reviewed.

Figures: Orange employs 12,500 people in the UK, T-Mobile 6,500.

It’s been a long road for T-Mobile that launched in 1993 called Mercury 1-2-1, then it became known as one-2-one and most recently T-Mobile when it was purchased by Deutsche Telecom.

Who win end up with T-Mobile….if anyone

Monday, September 7th, 2009

The Sunday Times in the UK reported that both Vodafone and Telefonice (who owns o2 in the UK) have table bids of £3.5 billion to buy T-Mobile from Deutche Telecom. The offers are said to be lower than DT expected.

Either move would create the UK’s largest Mobile network and would no doubt cause there to be questions over at monopolies mergers.
