There are 400 million active Mobile Phones in Europe, 72 million of those in the UK.

It is estimated that there are 90 million unused handset in the UK.

Every minute an estimated 1,712 are replaced.

Vodafone looks to be snaffling up T- Mobile

As has been widely reported it looks as if Vodafone will be buying T-Mobile (UK) from Deutche Telecom. The deal would make Vodafone the biggest UK operator by some way giving a total market share of around 40%.

Orange have announced the launch of their first handset using Google Andoid software. The HTC Hero handset, which launches shortly, will allow customers to download applications on to their handset.

The giant US retailer Best buy is to open 40 stores specialising in Mobile Communications. The company recently purchased a stake in the Europe’s largest mobile phone retailer The Carphone Warehouse.

£6 on landlines to give everyone Broadband

A recommendation has been made to the government to charge £6 on every landline to generate £150 million a year to pay to provide Broadband services to households which currently aren’t able to get the service. The government has said it would like every house in the country to be able to get Broadband by 2012, better get their skates on. It’s only a few years away.

Mobile Phone Directory

Controversial plans to launch a Mobile Phone directory have been announced recently. The company behind the scheme have said that no numbers will ever be given out. The person being contacted would be sent a message asking if they wish to be contacted by the searching party. Nevertheless the annoucement has cause concern over privacy and have led to worries that the scheme might lead to an increase in bullying etc.

The details to compile the directory have been gleaned and purchased from a wide range of sources, mostly from sites where customers have opted into receiving information from third parties. Legally this all stacks up apparently.

Each search is expected to cost a £1.

BT to offer faster Broadband

BT, Britains largest broadband provider with 4.8 million subscribers, has launched a faster 20 megabit per second service.

Good news for those with Broadband. However, Government figures last week showed that over 3 million people in the UK can’t get broadband.
