Operators still have work to do

A poll for the times in the UK today has suggested that 80% of people asked are not satisfied with the level of work networks operators are doing to tackle Social and Environmental issues associated with Mobile Phones.

When asked about mobile phone overall the two main issues of concern were Health - the potential risks to health of using phones and the location of the masts and Children’s safety covering bullying by text, theft of mobiles and inappropriate content both issues were highlighted by 32% of people polled.

Spotify on your Mobile

Customers of Spotify will soon be able to use the service on their mobiles. Users will be able to drag the required songs from their Laptops to their mobiles giving them music on the move.

The French are to ban Mobiles in Primary schools

Mobile Phones are to be banned from Primary schools in France due to fears that radiation given off from Phones will harm children. This is despite no conclusive evidence to show that Phones cause harm. The government will also be asking manufacturers and operators to produce handsets that are only able to send and receive text messages rather than actual calls.

There are also hundreds of groups around the country demanding that masts are taken down, they have been blamed for insomnia, headaches, fatigue and cancer.

MTN and Bharti Airtel in merger talks

MTN and Bharti Airtel are in merger talks that would create a telecoms giant with over 200 million subscribers.

MTN was worth about $27 billion at the close of the markets on Friday evening whilst Bharti was worth $34 billion. The networks have large customer bases in key markets of Africa and Asia, both seen as growth areas given the saturation in Mobile coverage in the West.

the cost of Phone Boxes to be shared?

Mobile Phone companies might be asked by Ofcom to share the bill for the maintenance of Phone boxes. Currently BT has to foot the bill for upkeep of the 56,000 phone boxes in the UK which cost around £1,000 a year to maintain, 60% of which are unprofitable. 10% of the phone boxes in the country are used only once per month and some aren’t used at all in a year.

Free to Roam with Vodafone

From August 1st of this year Vodafone customers who chose to register with its free Passport service will not be charged for roaming with their mobiles in 35 countries. The service applies to Prepay and Subscription services.

This is great news for Vodafone customers and is a strong competitive advantage, the other networks might well respond or face the prospect of losing lucrative business customers.

O2 Arpu decreasing

Figures from Telefonica, the parent company of O2 Britain’s biggest mobile phone operator, have announced that there has been a 4% drop in the Average Revenue per user (ARPU).

Could this be the recession changing users habits and resulting in a squeeze in revenues across the industry. Watch this space as more figures are released.

Carphone snap up Tiscali

As we reported last week Carphone Warehouse has snapped up the 1.45 million UK Broadband customers by buying Tiscali for a cool £286 milion. It gives Carphone Warehouse 4.25 million broadband customers more than quearter of the high speed Broadband market.

Carphone eyes up Tiscali

Carphone Warehouse, is hoping to become the second largest provider of Broadband services in the UK, by buying the troubled Broadband provider Tiscali’s UK assets.

Talk Talk currently has 2.8 million customers, Tiscali has 1.8 million. The aquisition would make Carphone the clear second runner to BT’s dominant position.
