Partnership sees Natalie selected as first scholarship student

O2 and the University of Reading’s Henley Business School have strengthened their three year partnership this year by adding a scholarship for marketing excellence to their ongoing project of learning. Natalie Na’was fought off strong competition to be selected as this year’s scholarship student.

Five highly qualified Masters students from top international universities were selected for interview by University of Reading’s Henley Business School and O2. The final decision saw Natalie winning the year scholarship, which in addition to financial support will see Natalie benefit from business insight and advice from O2’s marketing team, to ensure that she has the best industry information to aid her studies.

Natalie said: “I am so pleased to have been selected for the scholarship. To be part of one of Europe’s best business schools and have the support and backing of the UK’s best mobile phone provider is an amazing opportunity that I hope will lead to my future success and contribution to society”.

Dr Chris Phillips from the University of Reading’s Henley Business School added: “This partnership provides our students with the unique opportunity to listen to and engage with marketing managers from O2, the UK’s market leader in telecoms. Students experience marketing at the cutting edge of business best practice. Over the past three years the second year marketing module has been based around the O2 case study. Students work in teams putting together projects and presentations that are judged by course leaders and managers from O2’s Marketing team. Top students are offered summer placements by O2- to date over 35 students have worked for O2. They have all found the experience invaluable.

These rich experiences have led not only to higher examination results but to an expansion of student’s skill and indeed their employability. The placements have been a resounding success for both O2 and our students. Indeed the module learning at its very best; and so enjoyable for all involved”

Over the past three years a whole module of the second year marketing course has been based around an O2 case study. Students work in teams putting together a presentation and project to present to both their course leaders and managers from O2’s Marketing team.

Peter Rampling O2’s Marketing Director said: “We have been very impressed with quality, enthusiasm and contribution from the University of Reading students over the last three years. It made sense to both O2 and the University of Reading to put together a scholarship programme that would benefit us both, and most importantly the students”.

Vodafone signals the end of the road for sponsoring the England Cricket team

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Vodafone, the international telecoms giant, has announced that it will end its 12 year long sponsorship of the England Cricket team when the side returns from South Africa in early 2010.

The deal over the 12 years has seen the side’s fortunes fluctuate from the relatively bleak times in the late 1990s to more successful ones, especially in 2005 when the side regained the Ashes.

The sponsorship will have benefitted from the profile of many cricketers being raised by the success in 2005. The likes of Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, Kevin Peiterson, Michael Vaughan, Andrew Strauss became household names over that period.

The deal is the latest in a line of companies pulling out of sponsorship of sporting events or of teams. Recently Honda pulled out of Formula 1, and Subaru pulled out of Rallying.

Vodafone picks Huawei for Turkey

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Vodafone the telecoms giant has selected Huawei Technologies to supply infrastructure equipment for its 3G network in Turkey. The three providers who have won contracts to provide 3G services in Turkey are Turkcell, Avea and Vodafone.

Turkcell is the leading mobile phone operator of Turkey, based in Istanbul. The company has 34.8 million subscribers by the end of September 2007, making it the second biggest in Europe.

Company background

In February 1994, Turkcell started Turkey’s first GSM network. Its competitors are Vodafone with a market share of 24% and Avea with a market share of 16%.

Turkcell is the first Turkish company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), where its shares have been traded since July 11, 2000 along with trading on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB).

Turkcell’s shareholder structure is as follows: 51% is held by Turkcell Holding A.Ş., 4.15% by Çukurova Holding A.Ş., 13.07% by Sonera Holding B.V., 2.32% by MV Holding A.Ş., and the free float is 29.38%. Çukurova Group controls the company despite holding only 18% of the share capital, due to a complicated shareholding/voting structure.

Turkcell also provides GSM services internationally. It has 9.6 million subscribers via Fintur and its affiliates in partnership with TeliaSonera in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Moldova, as of September 30, 2007. Turkcell’s Ukranian majority-held business, Astelit, has 7.6 million subscribers.

Turkcell provides coverage of an area that, as of March 31, 2007, includes 100% of the population living in cities of 3,000 or more people, 97.21% of the total population, and 80.44% of Turkey’s land area.

North Cyprus

Turkcell also operates overseas. Its Northern Cyprus brand is known as Kuzey Kibris Turkcell (North Cyprus Turkcell) which operates in the Northern State of Cyprus only. KKTurkcell runs completely seperately from Turkey’s Turkcell, although the ownership of the network is the same. KKTurkcell is also the North’s largest Network Provider at the moment, in terms of registered users and network coverage. KKTurkcell numbers can be distinguished from Mainland Turkey Turkcell numbers easily, as KKTurkcell numbers begin with 0533.

Roaming

Turkcell has international roaming agreements with 503 operators in 192 countries as of June 16, 2006. It claims to have more international GPRS roaming agreements than any other operator (203 operators in 81 countries as of August 5, 2005). It also applies discounted roaming costs when calling From a Turkcell mobile to a KKTurkcell number.

Hazır Kart

In March 1999, Turkcell launched a prepaid service named “Hazır Kart” (literally Instant Card) for subscribers with lower spending levels, or who preferred to have more incoming than outgoing calls. Hazır Kart subscribers have access to all Turkcell’s global GSM services.

Sponsorship

Turkcell has been the “Official Communication Sponsor” of the national football and basketball teams since 2002. It also sponsors 14 of the 18 football teams in the Turkish Turkcell Super League. The “Turkcell Football Awards” project was initiated in 2003 to encourage “fair play” by awarding athletes who show fairness, impartiality, and solidarity.

Turkcell also sponsors the Istanbul International Film Festival and co-sponsors the Istanbul International Jazz Festival. Since 1999, Turkcell has supported the restoration of the ancient city walls in Bodrum. The last phase of the project, the restoration of an ancient theater, was completed in June 2003.

Turkcell has also continued to sponsor the CeBIT Bilişim Eurasia event, one of the major information technology fairs in Europe, for the tenth time in 2007.

Turkcell’s main educational project, “Modern Girls of Modern Turkey”, which started in 2000, grants scholarships to 5,000 young women in less developed parts of the country. The project received international recognition in June 2001, when it won the UK “Institute of Public Relations Excellence Award” and the “Crystal Obelisk Award” from the Foundation of Women Executives in Public Relations in New York in 2002.
