Fatal crash caused by hands-free driving

A haulier was jailed yesterday for causing a fatal crash whilst using a blue tooth handsfree whilst driving. The drive was so engrossed in converstation that he hadn’t realised the traffic ahead had come to a stop and ploughed into the back of stationary traffic killing one pasenger.

 Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) called for an outright ban on any use of mobile phones whilst driving whether handsfree or not.

The Department of Transport’s official stance making hands-free phone calls is that they are a “distraction” and should be avoided.

Government-funded Transport Research Laboratory has found that even hands-free phone calls make drivers four times more likely to have an accident, with concentration levels reduced for 10 minutes after the call has ended.

The maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving is 14 years

Thousands of Kenyans get a windfall with Safaricom

Kenya’s largest mobile phone network Safaricom gave thousands of Kenyans a smile when the price of the stock rose by 60% on it’s first day of trading yesterday. The issue, that was 500% oversubscribed, has created a whole new breed of shareholders in Kenyan. There would appear to be room for further growth as only about a third of the population of Kenya has used a Mobile Phone.

Did you know that a tonne of ore from a gold mine produces a weedy five grams of gold, meanwhile the same weight of mobile phones yeilds 150 grams. The price of gold has risen sharply recently and companies are now stripping out the gold used in the circuit boards.

Solar powered Apple

Apple have filed a patent for a technology that would enable users of devices such as iPhones & iPods to be charged using solar power. The patent is for a technology that allows solar cells to be inserted under the touch sensitive screens making their devices totally portable.
